Accident benefits may help with the effects of an Ontario motor vehicle accident, regardless of who caused it. The benefits available in an individual case depend on the applicable policy, the accident date, the coverage in place and the eligibility rules. Do not assume that every benefit listed online is included in your policy or payable in your circumstances.
FSRA’s current guidance explains that medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits remain mandatory, while other accident benefits are optional for policies entered into on or after July 1, 2026. Examples of optional benefits include income replacement, non-earner and caregiver benefits. Review the insurance documents that applied when the accident happened and ask the insurer to explain the coverage and any optional benefits.

Keep the policy documents, claim number, application forms, insurer letters and a timeline of treatment and correspondence together. If a benefit is refused or stopped, keep the written decision and obtain advice promptly about the applicable process and deadlines. Do not send confidential medical records through a general website form; ask the firm how to provide them securely.
