An Ontario man was recently hit by a sport utility vehicle and dragged underneath it for approximately 1,000 feet. The 40-year-old victim was riding his bicycle at approximately 3:38 p.m. on a recent Monday when the motorist struck him. The driver of the sport utility vehicle is in his 70’s. At this time, authorities are continuing their investigation into how this bicycle accident may have happened.
According to a sergeant serving as spokesperson for the Ontario Police, the driver did not know that he had hit the bicyclist. Allegedly, the man thought he had struck something; however, he did not know what it could have been. The driver unknowingly continued down the street with the bicyclist being dragged by his vehicle for about a block.
Police arrived on scene, and the seriously injured cyclist was transported by air to the hospital. Although he suffered upper body trauma, witnesses say that the cyclist was talking and conscious following the event. The roadways where the accident occurred were closed as investigators continued to examine the crash site until approximately 10:30 p.m. According to the police sergeant, accidents like these are not common because the car will not normally trap the cyclist, or the motorist will quickly notice what has happened.
At this time, no one has been cited in this Ontario bicycle accident. However, after police complete their investigations, evidence may be revealed to support a personal injury claim by the bicyclist for his injuries. Indeed, this man has likely required extensive medical care for his injuries, and he may be forced to spend time outside of work as he recovers from his injuries. These and other issues resulting from the crash could represent financial damages, which may be recoverable through the pursuit of a personal injury claim.
